Description

What a call back to reality...

I have a tendency to be up and about during the small hours, and in that time I'd get bored and come down to watch TV.  At around 6AM or so, there's usually nothing else that I normally watch, so sometimes I'll tune in to BBC-America for their World News that they have around that time. Hey, it's better than listening to the shrill ramblings of those bigots on "opinionated" US news networks.

Yesterday when tuning in to my last-resort program, I expected to be shown the usual: conflict in the middle east, ebola outbreak, celebrity gossip, business. Instead, the network dedicated both hours to covering the story of yesterday's attack on the offices of the satire-based Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris by radical Islamists, which left 12 dead and several wounded.

I tried to forget about it. I did this unconsciously (something I can't say about very many things) and went back to this new idea I had about relocating the events of a story to a different time period. I watched a webshow that tends to go on for hours per episode - something I like to do so that drawing, practicing, etc. isn't quite so dismally quiet.

With my spirits sapped (and no school or work to kick my ass back into gear) I didn't get much accomplished, so I ate something. Then went to bed, not immediately able to go to sleep, so I masturbated. I woke up, masturbated again just to feel good, and came downstairs with my sketchpad to watch TV while hopefully getting something productive done.

I didn't get very much more done than I had yesterday. 6AM came around, so I tuned in to BBCA. The news, again, was dedicated almost entirely to yesterday's events and the reaction by the French people. The reaction that artists had to this event has inspired me.

Have you looked at the image? Look again. The pen is uncapped, ready to create. The fist is closed and strong.

This wasn't just an attack on an office building. It wasn't just a cowardly act of barbarism against unarmed civilians. It was an attack against the very concept of Freedom of Expression. It was an assault on art.

We will not back down. We will not be intimidated. You cannot contain free expression.

Nous sommes Charlie.
